How Do You Handle Two Tasks With the Same Deadline?

Question

How would you handle two tasks that have the same deadline?

Answer

If two tasks have the same deadline, I first clarify their priority and business impact with the PM or my manager. I compare factors such as which task affects users or the release most, whether one task blocks other teammates, and how much effort and risk each task involves.

Then, I create a realistic plan. If possible, I break both tasks into smaller parts, complete the highest-priority or blocking work first, and share a clear timeline for the remaining work. I also look for opportunities to reduce scope, reuse existing solutions, or ask for support from a teammate.

If completing both tasks by the deadline is not realistic, I communicate that early rather than waiting until the last minute. I explain the trade-offs and propose options, such as moving a lower-priority task, reducing its scope, or assigning it to someone else. My goal is to make priorities clear, deliver the most valuable work on time, and keep stakeholders informed.
